Custom Crafted Components

Program Brief: Custom Crafted Component
Date: Fall 2015
Instructor: Kevin Rotheroe

This project is a custom crafted window shutter. The overlapping fins allow a varying degree of light to pass through. Emerging from a material and process studying, the fins twist around themselves, allowing for overlap in both directions and exposing their thinness.  The component was created by a process of flip milling. The overlap—not possible with traditional 3-axis milling—is achieved by laminating sheets of medium-density fiberboard which have been milled, flipped, and milled again. Through repeated material tests, the process was tuned to achieve the minimum thickness for the twice milled MDF. The overall component is 36 inch x 34 inch with a one inch depth.
